Author Jamie Gilson at St. Francis Xavier School Young writers and readers at St. Francis Xavier School were treated to a visit recently from children’s book writer Jamie Gilson, author of 20 nationally acclaimed books for elementary-school -age students. The visit was organized by the school librarian, Kathleen Finn. Students in grades two through five at St. Francis Xavier have been reading Gilson’s books since school began. Christ the King students explore flight, aviation BURLINGTON—In October, Andrea Farrar’s fifth-grade class at Christ the King School participated in STARBASE, an educational program created and operated by the Vermont Air National Guard. STARBASE Vermont serves local youth and teachers from schools throughout the state with the goal of using experiential learning to inspire students in science, technology, engineering and math, and teaching vital personal-development skills including team building, goal setting and healthy choices. STARBASE classes took place at Vermont Air National Guard headquarters in South Burlington and the CKS campus. The weeklong study of flight and aviation culminated in a rocket launch at Callahan Park near CKS. Nothing but Noodles fundraiser planned at St. Joseph School SOUTH BURLINGTON—On Sunday, Dec. 13, St. Joseph School in Burlington will be doing a fundraiser with Nothing but Noodles. Between noon and 8 p.m., 15 percent of total sales will be offered to support St. Joseph school. Simply mention the school at checkout time and provide the cashier with your receipt. Nothing but Noodles is a "fast-casual" restaurant in the Blue Mall on Dorset Street in South Burlington. It is kid-friendly, fast and inexpensive. The restaurant offers dishes from breadsticks to large salads, and noodle dishes including Italian, American and Asian styles. St. Francis Xavier students learn about money management WINOOSKI—The seventh-grade class at St. Francis Xavier School recently attended a class about managing money when three Merchants Bank employees conducted an FDIC Money Smart presentation at the school. The students learned about bank accounts and checking accounts and how to use them appropriately. The lessons included practice in filling out checks and recording their checks in a bank register.
Helping Hands/ Warm Hearts When Susan Catozzi’s, a teacher at St. Francis Xavier School, had to recently hospitalize her son Matthew, who was ill with bacterial pneumonia, the school community sprang into action to help. The Helping Hands/Warm Hearts program was begun last year with the St. Francis Xavier Home and School Association director, Michell Langlais, to support school families and friends. |

Recognition of women By Cori Fugere Urban As Joyce Corbin waited for the annual Recognition of Women in Ministry celebration to begin Nov. 1 at Our Lady of the Angels Church in Randolph, she reflected on her selection as one of the honorees. "It’s very humbling," Corbin, said the director for the past dozen years of religious education at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor. "It’s wonderful to be recognized for what I love to do." Corbin was one of 24 women honored for the many ways they serve and build up the Church, and like Corbin, felt humbled. "It’s very humbling," concurred Lucille Dupont, choir director at St. Francis Xavier Church in Winooski. "When I heard (I was going to get the honor), I was speechless."

Gifts for the Kingdom By Cori Fugere Urban "The faith we teach, that we hand on, is not some individualistic interpretation or secret personal wisdom," Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades, Bishop of Harrisburg, told catechists and youth ministers at the annual Gifts for the Kingdom Catechetical Congress Oct. 10 at St. Michael’s College in Colchester. "The faith we teach is the faith preserved in its integrity, guarded and protected, received by the Apostles from Christ Himself and transmitted through the centuries under the action of the Holy Spirit by the apostolic Church," Bishop Rhoades said in his keynote address in the Chapel of St. Michael the Archangel. "It’s the faith of Peter and the Apostles kept intact and proclaimed authoritatively by their successors."
